We're very excited to say that we've been working away on the Opening Gala for the fabulous new Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. As an office filled with two theatre majors, a video game designer, a floral designer, and the Queen B of Whimsey herself-- we love drama (on stage only please!) and entertainment. We're pleased to say that The Tobin will provide both.
In the midst of all of this fantastic event prep, we're combining "Throwback Thursday" with "Fabricate Friday," because we love alliteration so much.... Wrong. We think it is great to show amazing photos from some of our past events, but we're now on a mission to show you the good, the bad, the ugly and possibly even our blood, sweat, and (sometimes) tears. The development and production process is a long one, and we want to show you some of our clever decor solutions.

It's All About Time
April 2014: Steampunk / Time Travel Event
For this event, we brainstormed with our client through a variety of themes. They wanted a fun, interactive event. They shared our belief that big floral arrangements are for weddings and that a coming of age event should represent the personality of the honoree and just be a flat out awesome, "I can't believe she had.... at her party!!!!" event. We eventually settled on a steampunk, time travel theme and went to work on custom developing the save the date, invitation, etc. Steampunk can get pretty dark (just google it and you'll see) so our solution was to focus on metallics and blues to lighten the mood and whimsey the theme up a notch. You'll also notice a top hat motif as well... This theme carried on throughout production as we gave out top hats to guests. Here's a video of the final product:

Looks like a pretty good time, right?! Well, here's some of how we did it....
The location of this event was the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas. We took over a large field and had a few trees removed (before you go hating on us -- please note that more trees were planted elsewhere and the museum itself was starting construction on a new building immediately following our event) in order to accommodate our massive tent. Below you can see some of the tent building process. The very first bay is being installed in the video and the image shows the roof going on the last bay of our second tent. Please excuse the resolution of the video as my iPhone 5s can only do so much.
For decor during this event, we focused on our metal theme and used tin, bicycle rims, and other found objects. The first tent mostly consisted of an "old world, metal Victorian" vibe while the second tent had bright colors, and had a more whimsical futuristic feel to it. Below is a look at some of our various production stages and how we came up with some of the decor....
